Under general supervision, Sheriff's Dispatcher I receives and assesses 911 emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatches fire, medical, and law enforcement personnel, and maintains communication between the Nevada County Sheriff's Department and emergency services. This is the entry-level role in the series, where incumbents perform duties of increasing complexity under close supervision. Employees typically advance to Sheriff's Dispatcher II after gaining sufficient experience and demonstrating proficiency in all required tasks.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Completion of 12th grade.

  • Experience: At least one year in a role involving public contact, heavy phone usage, or customer service.

  • Licenses and Certificates:

    • Possession of a valid California or Nevada driver's license within 30 days of hire.

    • Completion of POST (Peace Officer Standards Training) Dispatch Academy training within 12 months of hire.

    • CLETS/NCIC certification within the designated training period.

  • Skills: Ability to type at a net rate of 35 words per minute.

Sheriff's dispatcher ii (lateral from other public agencies)

Sheriff's Dispatcher II performs all duties of Dispatcher I with greater independence and expertise. As the journey-level classification, Dispatchers at this level are expected to possess a complete understanding of dispatch procedures and responsibilities. They handle the full range of tasks with minimal supervision, provide leadership within the team, and may assist in training less experienced dispatchers.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Completion of 12th grade.

  • Experience: One year of experience performing public safety dispatch work at a level equivalent to the Sheriff's Dispatcher I classification in Nevada County.

  • Licenses and Certificates:

    • Possession of a valid California or Nevada driver's license within 30 days of hire.

    • Completion of POST (Peace Officer Standards Training) Dispatch Academy training within 12 months of hire.

    • CLETS/NCIC certification within the designated training period.

  • Skills: Ability to type at a net rate of 35 words per minute.
