Deputy Sheriff Trainee

This is a non-sworn entry level position only while attending a department sponsored Law Enforcement Academy (e.g., Basic Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Academy). The Deputy Sheriff Trainee is a recruiting and training level classification established to qualify candidates for duties as a Deputy Sheriff I in the Nevada County Sheriff's Department. Incumbents of this class undergo a formal and comprehensive training program in a California P.O.S.T. certified academy. Positions in this class are distinguished from Deputy Sheriff I in that the Deputy Sheriff Trainee position is a non-sworn classification which has no peace officer powers. Upon satisfactory completion of the training and graduation from the academy, the trainee will be promoted to the level of Deputy Sheriff I.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or have applied for citizenship at least one year prior to application.

  • Age: 21+ years of age at the time of appointment.

  • Education: Graduation fro U.S high school or satisfactory completion of an acceptable General Education Development (GED) test. Completion of at least 15 units of college education is desired from an accredited college or university.

  • Licenses and Certificates:

    • Possession of a valid driver's license within 30 days of hire.

    • A valid PELLETB T-Score of 42 or higher is required.

Deputy Sheriff I

$100,069 / year

PLUS up to

$5,000 hiring bonus

The Deputy Sheriff I Role is for those who possess a POST Certificate, but do not have at least 1 year of experience in a position equivalent to Deputy Sheriff I with Nevada County within the last three years.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or have applied for citizenship at least one year prior to application.

  • Age: 21+ years of age.

  • Education: Equivalent to completion of twelfth grade. Completion of at least 30 units of college education is desired from an accredited college or university.

    • Completion of at least 45 units of college education from an accredited college or university with a grade point average of 2.0 or above is desired and may qualify for advanced-step hiring.

  • Experience: At least one year in a role involving public contact, heavy phone usage, or customer service.

  • Licenses and Certificates:

    • Possession of a valid driver's license within 30 days of hire.

    • Possession of a valid, California POST BASIC Certificate; AND proof of no more than a three (3) year break of employment as a peace officer;
      OR
      Completion of POST basic re-qualification course administered by the State Commission on POST with no longer than a  three (3) year break of employment as a peace officer (possession of a valid  POST Basic certificate will satisfy this requirement).

Deputy Sheriff II

$110,566 / year

PLUS up to

$5,000 hiring bonus

Deputy Sheriff II handles advanced law enforcement tasks, including supervising less experienced deputies and conducting complex investigations. The role involves leadership duties, mentoring, and ensuring compliance with legal protocols.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or have applied for citizenship at least one year prior to application.

  • Age: 21+ years of age.

  • Education: Equivalent to completion of twelfth grade. Completion of at least 30 units of college education is desired from an accredited college or university.

  • Experience: One year of experience in a position equivalent to Deputy Sheriff I with Nevada County within the last three years.

  • Licenses and Certificates:

    • Possession of a valid driver's license within 30 days of hire.

    • Possession of a valid, California POST BASIC Certificate; AND proof of no more than a three (3) year break of employment as a peace officer;
      OR
      Completion of POST basic re-qualification course administered by the State Commission on POST with no longer than a  three (3) year break of employment as a peace officer (possession of a valid  POST Basic certificate will satisfy this requirement).
